Veteran Benefits in South Carolina

One of my veteran clients reached out to me and shared why he chose to retire in South Carolina.

The first reason is that his house and one acre of land is tax exempt. The state also exempts 2 vehicles for 100% disabled vets and gives them free handicap license plates. Another perk he mentioned is that Aiken county has a VA clinic versus going to the Augusta VA Medical Hospital for his healthcare services.

South Carolina also offers special benefits for its military service members and Veterans including income tax deduction for military retired pay, state employment preferences, education and tuition assistance, as well as hunting and fishing license privileges.

When you combine this with Aiken County’s low cost of living, many veterans think it is a great place to retire. Aiken county’s cost of living index is 85 on a scale of 100 which is 15% cheaper than the average city. In addition, it is a great central location only 2 hours from the beach, 2 hours from the mountains, and 2 hours from Atlanta where you can easily fly anywhere you need to be.

Georgia also offers benefits for its military service members. It offers tax exemptions up to a specific dollar amount on the home, free driver’s licenses and nursing home care for war veterans.

Eligibility for benefits may depend on residency, military component and veteran disability status.
