Recently, I read a Wall Street Journal article about how home designers have evolved their approach to a successful kitchen design, and I wanted to share those new trends with you!
Since the 1920’s, designers swore by the Golden Triangle layout for the kitchen. The Golden Triangle is the invisible line drawn from the fridge, cooktop, & sink, where it forms a triangle.
Well, that trend has somewhat faded, and now experts are leaning more towards functional zones in the kitchen. This includes things such as having a specific area for your coffee needs: A cabinet, pantry, or countertop that has your coffee maker, mugs, coffee, cream, sugar, spoons, etc, all in one area together. Another example is having a dedicated space to prep with a 2nd prep sink & trash bin that are out of the way of the main sink area.
Blending openness with organization, is a balance and sometimes eliminating the upper cabinets to create a more open feel and opting instead for a ceiling to floor wall pantry for all your storage needs can be an option. Floating or open shelves can also create an open feel with easy access, but also allows you to show off your pretty objects while also being functional.
If you have the space for a 2nd “dirty” kitchen, that is another trend that is popular with designers. With a 2nd dirty or messy kitchen, there will be a wall, or divider of some sort, or even a different room, that will house a 2nd dishwasher, a 2nd sink, and recycle bins to hide the mess.
And last, it is ok to mix appliances. You don’t have to match the name brand and finish anymore. It is ok to have that colorful stove that you’ve always wanted along with a white, stainless steel, or cabinet front dishwasher.
I hope this information from the article helps you to feel free to love your kitchen exactly how you want it, and not feel like you have to follow strict rules.
