When you retire, should you sell your current home? Trying to retire, sell a home, and find a new place to live all at once probably seems a little overwhelming.
For this reason, there are four things I recommend you consider as you think about these plans.
- When are you going to retire?
- When is the best time to sell?
- Where do you want to live?
- Is moving into interim housing while you plan your transition a possibility?
The last consideration on this list is particularly important. It’s also one that not many people consider. Temporary housing allows you to take your time with your transition. An interim housing situation also allows you to test out a style of home you haven’t lived in in the past.

Remember that market conditions will have an influence on your success as a seller.

If you plan on downsizing, for example, living in a smaller home temporarily could give you an idea of whether this kind of property would suit your needs and lifestyle down the line.
Current market conditions are another thing to take into account, since these conditions will have an influence on your success as a seller.
