If you plan on selling your home this year, there are four New Year’s resolutions you can follow that will make living in the home more enjoyable and selling it less of a hassle.

First, step back and look at each room in the house. Your eye should be caught by the biggest and best feature of each room.

The first place to do this is in the kitchen. This is an area where we typically drop all of our stuff from the day after we get home, and we tend to store a lot of appliances and utensils that we don’t use on a regular basis along our countertops, so pack up and store away items you don’t need or use on a daily basis.

Also, get rid of any decorations or pictures that are cluttering your countertops while you’re at it. Specifically, look at your refrigerator. We tend to store a lot of things on top of or at the sides of our refrigerators, so clear away those things to make a cleaner, clearer presentation.

Do the same thing with your bathroom vanity tops, as well. If you can get in the habit of making your bathrooms look like nice hotel bathrooms on a daily basis, it will make selling your home easier because you’re preparing your house to look great each day.

Next, focus on your living rooms. Living rooms are for relaxing, but they still need a clean, crisp presentation—not a lazy lounge look. That means get rid of any old magazines you don’t read anymore or any old, tired-looking pillows.

After that, it’s onto your bedrooms. We love to make our bedrooms convenient and pile stuff on top of side tables and nearby dressers, but these might be things you don’t use every single day, so again, pack them up and store them away. In your closet, pack up any clothes you’re not wearing or anything that’s designed for a season you’re not currently in.

Also, remember that buyers love light, bright houses, so consider replacing any dark blinds or curtains you have with brighter ones.

This brings us to our final resolution: Install fresh, bright light bulbs in each one of your rooms. The least expensive way to freshen up your home and make it look bright is by repainting it, but you can also just install some fresh light bulbs. If there’s an area of your home where there are four light bulbs adjacent to each other, like what you typically find in a bathroom, make sure they all match so they look good in photos.
