Keep your home warm this winter with these 6 tips!
- Weatherstripping around doors and windows to knock out drafts. Replace your door seals, door sweeps or thresholds anywhere they are damaged, missing or just old and not as efficient. This will keep the cold outside air from seeping into your home. Don’t forget to check your door from the house to the garage as even that garage air could be coming in making it drafty.
- Use a window insulation kit IF you have single pane windows. Studies show it could increase the window efficiency up to 90%! And these inexpensive easy-to-install kits can be purchased on amazon or at your favorite home improvement store. They are see-through, so it doesn’t block your view, and easy to remove after the cold season has passed.
- Check your crown molding and baseboards for any separation or cracks. If you feel any cool air, caulk it. With the heat running in the home, sometimes crown molding and baseboards pull away from the ceiling or floor allowing a space for cool air to come through from outside or the attic.
- Be sure your attic, crawlspace, and/or basements have enough insulation. Consult an R-Value chart to determine the appropriate amount you need for the area you live in.
- Ceiling fans should turn clockwise in the winter. Clockwise pushes the warm heat that rises back down to the living space. And be sure it is at the lowest speed so you are not creating a breeze.
- Insulate pipes and faucets. Frozen pipes can burst and cause damage to your home.
