Are you or your parents thinking there may be a need to downsize in the near future, in the next few months, or even the next few years? If so, this is the place to start. There are several reasons why people decide to downsize, and we’re going to explore some of them.
There are 3 primary reasons why people decide to downsize, sell the big house, or are forced to make a move, and we are going to discuss those.
The first one is social engagement. Studies show that those people that remain socially engaged and intellectually engaged, live happier, longer, and healthier lives. If you talk to somebody that is active and healthy at 83, 93, or even 103, they will tell you it’s because they have remained engaged. Whether it’s a 55 or older community or neighborhood such as Woodside, having that social engagement leads to a healthier lifestyle.
The second reason why people decide to downsize is because the house becomes a burden. An older home can require upkeep, so living in a home that might be more manageable, whether it’s a one-story home or a smaller lot, or even a newer home, can make it so that you can enjoy the things you love to do in life more than spending time stressing about an aging home.
The third reason why people decide to downsize is for health & wellness. Living a sedentary lifestyle contributes to increased risk of disease, falls, & hospitalization. Living alone, even as a couple in an isolated environment, along with changes in our appetite, with age, can cause nutritional deficits leading to poor health. By living in an active adult community, where there’s engagement around meals, it increases most people’s energy, decreases their illness, results in fewer doctor visits, and overall it has a positive impact on life. Unfortunately, many seniors or their children find themselves making a reactive downsizing move rather than a proactive move because they’re already experiencing a decline in health or well-being. This is why step 1 in the downsizing process is about creating a plan in advance, so that IF the time comes when there is a move needed, you are the one making the decision. Step 1 is critical. The decision as to where you are going to move, when you are going to move, and how your lifestyle is going to look, may be made by YOU rather than someone else.
