The winter months are a great opportunity to prepare your home for the spring market, so it’s time for some real estate 101. Here are four tips that will help you maximize this opportunity:
1. Drive up to the front of your house and take a look at what needs to be done. Winter is a great time to clear out your flower beds, trim your hedges, remove any empty flower pots, edge your grass, and make the whole area look fresh. This improvement will last for several months because there isn’t any growth happening. Also, walk up to your front door and see how it looks. Does it need a new doorknob? A fresh coat of paint? A cobweb sweep? Most homeowners don’t go in and out of their front door every day and therefore don’t get a good look at it, but it’s the first impression buyers get of your home, so make sure it looks fabulous.
2. Declutter. People want to look at your house, not your stuff. In your kitchen and bathrooms, less is more when it comes to the countertops. Also, remove any throw rugs to make these spaces look bigger. Remove all the magnets and everything else from the refrigerator in your kitchen as well.

3. Paint over any bold colors. Don’t worry about your kids’ rooms, but if there are any bold colors in your dining room or kitchen, paint over them with neutral colors. This will go a long way in snagging the price you want.
4. If you have a room that feels small, mount its window curtains closer to the ceiling. This will make the ceiling feel higher and the room look bigger. Also, if you can extend your horizontal curtain rods outward by about a foot on each side so that the curtains hang just outside the windows, the windows will look bigger. You can do this trick even in rooms that already have high ceilings. Buyers love high ceilings and homes that look light and bright, and this tip checks each box. If you plan on staying in your home for a while, you’ll enjoy this upgrade as well.
