Episode 4: Upgrade Your Home Series

Updating your kitchen can be a huge undertaking, especially if you’re going to be living in the house while the renovation project is going on. However, there are plenty of things you can do to upgrade and refresh your kitchen without going through a full-blown renovation.

Doing just one or two of the following can dramatically change the look of your kitchen:

  1. Paint your kitchen cabinets – painting your kitchen cabinets can refresh the kitchen altogether. If you have a smaller kitchen, try light or white paint to make the space feel bigger. If you like dark or bolder tones, try the Tuxedo style, which is painting top cabinets white & lower cabinets black or a darker color. If you have a larger kitchen, you can try those bolder, darker colors. A big space can handle that. Painting your cabinets vs replacing your cabinets can save you over 70% the cost, and it can be done in as little as 2 days.
  2. Replace your kitchen appliances – Don’t want to commit to painting? Try replacing your kitchen appliances with a different color appliance. Try white, stainless steel, matte black, or a custom color. This can change the look of your kitchen dramatically. You can also change the handles on your cabinets to match your appliances.
  3. Remove cabinet doors – try removing some upper cabinet doors, paint the inside of the cabinets, and then display some of your nicer dish ware. This can create a nice focal point in your kitchen.
  4. Change out your countertops – appealing and durable countertops can add value to your home. QUARTZ countertops are the most appealing ones to buyers right now, because they are beautiful & low maintenance. MARBLE countertops are also beautiful, but they are high maintenance. They require a lot of sealing and stain easily. GRANITE countertops have the more spotted look. They require moderate maintenance, and you do have to seal it occasionally as well. BUTCHER BLOCK is another type of countertop, and it also requires moderate maintenance in that you have to seal it periodically to protect the wood. All of these types can range from $50/sqft – $200/sqft, so figure out your budget, and then choose the type of countertop that meets your needs.
  5. Pantry – pantries can change the look of your kitchen, as well. You can remove the doors, whether it’s a walk-in pantry or cabinet pantry, and organize it. Purchase like-containers to store your foods and items in, or get baskets and group like-items in them. Then label them with cute labels.
